Legislative Survey

We are committed to getting our bills through in the upcoming legislative session.  A brief summary of the bills and the survey that we are asking you to take follows. The purpose of the survey is to enable us to keep contact with those affected by the legislation. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AN MRU MEMBER TO TAKE THE SURVEY. We need everyone’s help to make this legislation happen! We are not asking about the COLA bill as that affects almost all and we report on that in our newsletters on an ongoing basis.

  1. In July 2004 the penalty for those who took Option B was reduced from 3% to 1% and those who took Option C the penalty was cut just about in half. Yet the penalties remained the same for those retired prior to that date whose pensions are half or less than those getting the benefit.  Those who are survivors of someone who took an Option C are also getting a smaller pension.
  2. Those who retired after April 1996 were able to add up to 4 years of their veteran’s service time to their creditable service. We want to extend this same benefit to those who retired prior to that date and were classified as veterans as long as they do not exceed 80%.
  3. Those who retired after September 2000 were able to add up to 4 years to their creditable service if they had a child prior to January 1975. It was a correction of the discriminatory practice of forcing teachers to leave the classroom if they were pregnant. We want to extend this same benefit to those who retired prior to that date and qualify as long as they do not exceed 80%.
  4. Those who retired prior to January 1990 were denied COLAs until 1971, and were denied 6 years of COLAs in the 1990’s. They also were denied the right to use any of the creditable service bills that were passed after 1990. We request that a one time adjustment be made to their pension and permanently attached by which they multiply the number of years of service times the number of years retired times two and add this amount permanently to their pension.
  5. We are trying to determine how many districts pay any of the Medicare B premium.
  6. We are also trying to determine how many are paying larger Medicare premiums.

You can download and print the survey if you would like to mail it in or give it to a friend who doesn't have access to a computer.
